Gardeners and Seeds
Gardeners and Seeds
We are proud of our school community and enjoy encouraging relationships flourish amongst our children. To help settle the EYFS children in, we have our 'Gardeners and Seeds' programme, where the Year 6 children are paired up with a Reception child each. This programme allows for plenty of support with the little ones. The programme occurs throughout the first full academic year. The Gardeners will first meet their Seeds during the transition period before school, at the Teddy Bear's Picnic, where you will also be present to meet your child's Gardener too.
The Gardeners and Seeds Programme is a key element of pupil leadership at Brookfield Community Primary School. Through this initiative, Year 6 pupils take on the role of Gardeners, nurturing and supporting Reception children, our Seeds, as they begin their school journey.
The programme provides meaningful opportunities for Year 6 pupils to develop leadership, responsibility, communication and mentoring skills while serving as positive role models for younger children. In turn, Reception pupils gain confidence, develop relationships and feel a strong sense of belonging within the school community.
Rooted in our vision of developing "confident, capable individuals ready to make a positive difference in the world," the programme promotes our core values of Respect, Resilience, Kindness, Independence and Inclusion.
Through carefully planned shared experiences, Year 6 pupils learn to lead with empathy and responsibility, while Reception children are supported to grow in confidence and independence. Together, they contribute to a school culture where everyone feels valued, included and encouraged to succeed.
Throughout the year, activities have been carefully sequenced to provide a progressive journey. The programme begins by establishing trusting relationships and supporting Reception pupils as they settle into school life. As these relationships strengthen, activities develop communication, teamwork and collaboration before moving on to shared learning experiences, community engagement and responsibility for the wider environment. The year concludes with opportunities to reflect, celebrate achievements and recognise the positive impact that pupils have had on one another.
