Year 2 Curriculum

Dear Parents/Carers/Pupils

Welcome to Year 2's page!

In Year 2 we strive to do our very best each and every day.

This half term, Year 2's topic is all about 'the place where I live' so get ready and grab a magnifying glass, put on your deerstalker and change your name to Sherlock because we're going to become street detectives! We will begin our journey by exploring our area and following our local streets, take pictures of the buildings and businesses and plants we see. Then we will look at photographs which will help us spot any similarities and differences between the houses and shops today and the past. We will find out about the history of our school and talk to people about their past experiences. We will also study and draw maps and look at the work of urban artists.

This half term in English, our work will be focused on embedding reading and writing skills using stories from different settings. The children will work on creating simple and compound sentences correctly punctuated and develop a positive attitude towards writing.

In Year 2, Maths is really important. We will be focusing on the place value of numbers and using this to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers using mental and written strategies. Times tables will be learnt throughout the weeks and will be tested every Friday. Year 2 should know their 2, 3, 5 and 10x tables by the end of Key Stage 1.

Spelling will be taught through Phonics sessions and we will be carrying out rapid intervention phonics to help prepare the children for the Phonics Screening Test. Spellings will be sent home every Friday and will be tested in class on the following Friday.

Our PE lessons will be on Thursday afternoons. We would very much appreciate if you could ensure that children come into school wearing their PE kit (plain dark coloured tracksuit bottoms or shorts, white school PE t-shirt, plain dark trainers and a plain dark coloured sweatshirt).

Homework

The children are greatly encouraged to read daily at home. This can be their school reading book or any other text that they choose. Every time you listen to your children, read and sign their reading record and they will receive a reading sticker on their chart for every book completed. Once they have reached the end of their sticker chart, they will receive a small prize.

Spellings and times tables will also be sent home every week.

Due to the current circumstances, please could you NOT send any work back into school but instead send a picture via Class Dojo of the completed work for a Dojo reward.

Please remember to carry on accessing activities on Times Tables Rockstars and MyMaths.

Children will need to bring a water bottle, clearly labelled with their name, into school each day and fruit will be available.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact me via our Class Dojo.
