English and Phonics

These documents show the expected standards for Year one children for reading and writing. These are what your child should be able to do by the end of the year.

The common exception words are words you can learn and practice at home to help your child.

Please read as often with your child as you can. If you can read nightly that is fantastic. Every time you read at home please sign your child's reading record so we can see you are working with your child at home. We will aim to change reading books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Phonics is vitally important for your child to progress in reading and writing. Please help your child by sounding out words for reading and writing rather than spelling them out.

Please refer to the phonics section under the rainbow on this page for further guidance.
